Shanghai Fashion Week

SHANGHAI FASHION WEEK

On the 20th October, Cheap Monday held its first fashion show outside of Scandinavia at Shanghai Fashion Week, Taiping Park. The Spring/Summer 2013 collection, premiered at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Stockholm, was presented on the catwalk.

Media showed great interest in Cheap Monday, where the Design Team and COO Håkan Ström were interviewed in numerous magazines, dailies and TV-channels, ranging from business to fashion press, both Chinese and international.

The fashion show itself was a success, with a full house of over 600 guests. A big thank you to show producer Yongyan Liu Hahnel and Consulate General of Sweden, Shanghai, who were our main collaborators in China.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

To understand our world, we humans divide things into categories. They are often opposites: day/night, human/animal, sick/healthy. Through categorization we create a sense of security. Anomalies exist in between categories. When encountering an anomaly we can react with horror, disgust or fear. The reactions are often physical and our intellect isn’t always involved. For the SS-13 collection, we have focused on anomalies such as the androgynous or genderless, treating these subjects in relation to the frames of duality. We have gone to outer space, returning with UFO and alien inspiration for prints and materials. The alien, artificial, ambiguous, strong, weird and genderless is central for the collection.

Inspiration Autumn/Winter 2012

For AW12 we are slowing down, focusing on the long cycles and evolution in nature. We have chosen a naturalistic approach, looking at the periodic table, natural history, DNA and fossils. The overwhelming transformation from dead plants to oil takes over 100 million years. The universe is monumental and puts our lives into perspective.

This outlook has shaped the denim washes and effects as well as serving as inspiration for prints and colours. The processes in nature theme can be seen on the denim through fades and shades of fog and dust – both in colour ranges and washes. In addition we have used a lot of coarse structures to give a feeling of earth or gravel. Focusing on non denim fabrics in denim styles give the possibility to use a wider palette of tones and colours, while maintaining a 5-pocket look.

We found Eastern philosophy a fitting complement when looking for inspiration for the collection. A circular perception of time slows the pace and gives room for dedication and responsibility. To give heed to these ideas and to implement something diligently and faithfully, with great patience and discipline, leaves tracks as a contemporary martial arts influence in the collection. The balance of mind, spirit and body can also be spotted in an active wear touch, the paperbag waists, folded layering, kimono shaped tops and wide trousers.

Carnaby Street, London, UK

On February 16 Cheap Monday threw a Launch Party to celebrate the opening of Cheap Monday Store Carnaby Street. The party was held at the new store, the night before it was opened to the public. A few hundred guests dropped in and out to join in the occasion.

The store is Cheap Mondays first UK stand-alone store. It's located in London, Soho, at 39 Carnaby Street and have a store area of approximately 330m2 spread over two floors. The store offers the entire Cheap Monday range, with womenswear, menswear, jeans and in-season collections, as well as baby, accessories and underwear. The store will also boast a separate section for Cheap Mondays shoe collection.

In connection with the store opening Cheap Monday took over the streets of London with jeans and a roving party bus. The party bus traveled between London Fashion Week's hub, Somerset House and the new Cheap Monday store. In East London and the area around Soho, early-rising Cheap Monday fans found their favourite jeans on buildings and fences, and in the store in Carnaby Street DJs played throughout the opening weekend.
